Belgium: Police/Politie

The integrated police, structured on two levels, are composed of two autonomous entities: the Federal Police and the Local Police, which are connected with each other and perform an integrated police function. The Federal Police carry out their mission on the whole Belgian territory and are made up of the General Commissioner’s Office, three general directorates (General Directorate of Administrative Police, General Directorate of Judicial Police and General Directorate of Support and Management), central directorates and services based in Brussels and decentralised directorates and services in the different districts, General Directorate of Administrative Police. This last general directorate performs administrative police missions such as traffic policing on the main roads, waterway policing on the North Sea and waterways, railway policing on the railways and in the stations, air policing at the national airport and in the regional airports, immigration and border control, air and police dog support.

Bulgaria: Гранична полиция

In 1887, the Bulgarian parliament adopted the first law for border guards, based on suggestion from the Prime Minister and Minister of the Internal Affairs of the Principality of Bulgaria – Stephan Stambolov. According to that law, each border guard is responsible for surveillance of a border line not less than two and not more than six kilometres long. In December 1997, with the adoption of the Law of Ministry of Internal Affairs, the military structure of the border guards was transformed to the Border Police. For the first time the surveillance of the border and passport control at the border-crossing points were combined into one police structure. At present, Chief Directorate ‘Border Police’ has an active role in the international cooperation with Frontex, leading European authorities, as well as Border Guard Authorities in Black Sea littoral countries. The official day of Border Police is on 22 December.
