National authorities

The police in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland constitute one national force, employed directly by the State. The Minister of Justice, who is the chief police authority, exercises his powers through the National Commissioner of Police and the Commissioners of the police districts. There are approximately 11 000 police officials in Denmark, who serve with the Danish National Police in Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the 12 police districts that cover the whole country. Altogether, there are approximately 14 000 employees in the police service, where important functions are carried out by attorneys, administrative personnel and a series of other occupational groups. The police districts carry out the practical border control of the Danish borders under the supervision and responsibility of the Danish National Police.
