Frontex Releases Annual Risk Analysis for 2024/2025: Navigating Complex Challenges

2024-07-18

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, announces the release of its Annual Risk Analysis for 2024/2025. This comprehensive report, crucial for strategic decision-making, highlights the evolving risks and challenges at the European Union's external borders, reflecting Frontex’s commitment to secure and humane border management.

The Annual Risk Analysis underscores the intricate geopolitical dynamics affecting Europe’s borders. With ongoing conflicts near the EU’s periphery, such as the war in Ukraine, and the continuous instability in regions like the Middle East and the Sahel, the migratory pressures on Europe remain significant.

The Annual Risk Analysis 2024/2025 presents key risks to the EU’s external borders for strategic decision-making based on a new regional approach. This edition focuses exclusively on risks that may arise upon entry to the EU within one year. The report concludes with an analysis of overarching risks. It also provides a comprehensive picture of future challenges and threats, including cross-border crime and terrorism, that could affect the security and functioning of the EU’s external borders.

“The Annual Risk Analysis is crafted to serve as a strategic guide for policymakers, operational leaders, and our partners both within and outside the EU. By understanding the dynamics at our borders, we can better prepare for and respond to the challenges that lie ahead,” said Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens.

At the core of Frontex’s mission is a commitment to humanitarian principles. The agency’s operations, whether patrol missions at sea or facilitating legitimate travel and trade, are guided by the principles of dignity, respect, and human rights.

In response to the multifaceted nature of these risks, Frontex has intensified its operational activities and focused on enhancing the command structure of its uniformed service to be more flexible and ready for future challenges. The agency has expanded its standing corps and is gearing up for the implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and support with the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. These measures are designed to enhance Frontex’s ability to manage borders effectively while upholding the highest standards of dignity, respect, and fundamental rights.
