Frontex looks at new border surveillance technologies

2017-05-12

This week, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, met with 15 companies specialising in providing border surveillance technology to discuss which solutions could be used by national border authorities of EU member states.

Over two days, selected international companies presented products which could improve land and maritime surveillance, such as manned and unmanned aircraft, surveillance sensors, as well as systems for advanced analytics and intelligence gathering.

Some of the technologies presented focused on secure land and maritime communications systems, others offered solutions for real time data acquisition for operational purposes.

The proposed technologies are reviewed by experts from national border guard authorities and Frontex to determine which would be most useful for Frontex and member states’ needs.

As part of its mandate, Frontex assists EU member states and the European Commission in identifying key border security technologies. The agency regularly monitors new products, services and developments in the field of border security and organises two meetings a year with industries specialised in border control technologies.

The next meeting with industry will be organised in November.
