2022-06-02

On May 31 – June 1, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, co-organised the fifth Annual European Coast Guard Event together with the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

The two-day event, organised in hybrid format in Warsaw, brought together representatives from the Member States, the European Commission and the three EU agencies to exchange views on matters related to EU cooperation on coast guard functions.

During the thematic discussions, particular focus was placed on gathering feedback from the Member States on multipurpose maritime operations. The participants also discussed the sharing of information with data provided by EFCA, EMSA and Frontex, which enhance the Member States’ maritime domain awareness and operational response, as well as the status of the practical handbook on European cooperation on coast guard functions and other capacity building projects.

“The operational implementation of our inter-agency cooperation has already shown a number of results, such as reduction of overlapping activities, implementation of multi-purpose maritime operation, tailor-made information services, cross-sector training and capacity building, sharing of assets and resources,” said Frontex Deputy Executive Director Lars Gerdes when opening the event.

EFCA, EMSA and Frontex support Member States in the implementation of different coast guard functions, such as fisheries control, maritime safety, border control and search and rescue, under the framework of European coast guard cooperation. The three agencies renewed their Tripartite Working Arrangement for an indefinite period in March 2021.
