Keeping Europe safe means tackling potential terrorist threats at its external borders. Dealing with terrorism at the borders is a challenge for Europe’s law enforcement, but also an opportunity. Borders provide geographical filter where Member States can take actions and enforce the rule of law. More secure external borders mean more secure Europe.

Frontex analysis: Role of border guards in countering terrorism

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, in cooperation with the EU member states, has been stepping up the fight against terrorism and other cross-border crimes in recent months. The hundreds of specialised border guard officers taking part in Frontex operations do this through screening, registration, document checks and intelligence gathering at the borders. All of these actions support member states in identifying potential travelling terrorists or persons of interest. Frontex also regularly provides intelligence to Europol.
Checks at the external borders remain one of the main safeguards of the Schengen area and significantly contribute to guaranteeing the long-term security of the EU and its citizens.
