This week, Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri took part in the Annual Meeting of the DELPHI Economic Forum. He participated in the panel discussion “Solidarity and Contestation: Asylum, Migration and Border Management” together with Panagiotis Mitarachi, Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum.

“The DELPHI Economic Forum is an excellent place to address emerging challenges, one of which is the challenge of migration into the EU. This challenge, as Greece knows all too well, includes the exploitation of the desperation of people seeking to reach the European Union. I am proud to say that on my watch, Frontex has always stood by Greece in many difficult hours and became a true operational partner for Member States, assisting them in handling regular border activities, fighting cross-border crimes, as well as handling increase migratory pressure or supporting efforts to help war refugees,” said the Executive Director while opening the panel discussion.

While in Greece, Director Leggeri met with the Minster for Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Ioannis Plakiotakis and the Commandant of the Hellenic Coast Guard, Georgios Aleksandrakis. He also took part in a panel discussion with Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, exchanging views and ideas about promoting a value-based vision of Europe.

The DELPHI Economic Forum is a non-profit organisation engaging political, economic, business, academic, and other leaders to address emerging global challenges, influence the national and regional agendas, and promote sustainable and socially responsible growth policies for Europe, the wider Eastern Mediterranean, and Greece. This year’s Annual Meeting was under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, H.E. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
