Learning Our Way to Sustainability

2022-07-07

Sustainability relies on fresh and innovative ideas to continuously optimise and find efficiencies. The Frontex research study on the Green Deal and the European Border and Coast Guard (EBCG) took a closer look at how these ideas have been transformed into reality. The analysis of the sustainability activities of seven different organisations made it possible to collect useful information about relevant experiences and build on the lessons learnt. The case studies helped visualise what has been done so far, what is feasible, and what to avoid paving the way towards sustainability.

For instance, the case studies on the European Defence Agency or the French Ministry of Interior showcase how it is possible to have a top-down control and ensure coordination across enacting entities. The studies on the Swedish Coast Guard or the French Ministry of Interior illustrate a transition towards a greener fleet by identifying a number of areas for improvement, such as fuel replacement, speed management, updated manuals, and proper training. The headquarters of the European Central Bank and the Edge building are, in turn, perfect examples of sustainable construction and active engagement with local communities.

All these case studies were included in the report to highlight that communication and knowledge sharing between the EBCG authorities are key enablers of the sustainability journey. The exchange of best practices and lessons learnt can only act as a lever for more efficient implementation of green initiatives. The detailed analysis of the case studies can be found in the final research report available HERE
