ENTRUSTED survey – Bringing the user perspective to EU GOVSATCOM

2021-05-04

Between April and June, ENTRUSTED consortium launched a public consultation with the governmental and institutional users managing security-critical missions, operations and infrastructures, in the form of a questionnaire.

ENTRUSTED, a project funded under Horizon 2020, aims to identify the end users’ needs and requirements related to secure satellite communication (SatCom) and to create a roadmap of research and innovation activities related to user technologies.

Governmental and institutional entities rely on SatCom in myriad of critical situations. SatCom is an essential capability when terrestrial communication systems are not available and communication links need to be ensured and secured. The new regulation for the next EU Space Programme 2021-2027 introduces Governmental Satellite Communications (EU GOVSATCOM) as a new programme component dedicated to secure, reliable and cost-effective satellite communication services for the governmental and institutional users.

The survey will permit to assess current and evolving needs of prospective EU GOVSATCOM users, as well as their use of existing secure SatCom capabilities. The survey results will be used to derive a set of prioritised user requirements, which will be subsequently considered in the implementation of regulations for the GOVSATCOM component of the EU Space Programme.

Frontex is one of the external stakeholders/collaborators in the ENTRUSTED project. The Agency’s Research and Innovation will support this endeavour by providing to the project the consolidated input from the European Border and Coast Guard (EBCG) community.
