FOCUS AREA: perception analysis, social network analysis

Border and external security may depend on a variety of human factors and social issues including gender. This requires the adoption of appropriate organizational measures and a deeper understanding of how novel technologies and social media impact border control. The main objectives of the PERCEPTIONS project are to identify narratives, images and perceptions of Europe abroad and to investigate how different narratives could lead to problems like false expectations, security threats or even radicalisation. On top of that, the project aims to create toolkits of creative and innovative measures to react or even counteract on the problems taking into consideration social, societal and structural aspects. To conclude, PERCEPTIONS will create a web platform targeted at the end-user groups to provide them with easily accessible, relevant information.

Research topics:

  • identify narratives, images and perceptions of Europe abroad
  • distorted information flow and how false narratives lead to security threats
  • dynamic new approaches and (counter-)measures in the form of intuitive toolkits to deconstruct false narratives and enhance the dissemination of right narratives

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 833870
