FOCUS AREA: Unmanned systems, border surveillance, data fusion, surveillance platform, command and control, target detection, sensor processing

BorderUAS project’s core objective is to enhance border and external security. It focuses on next generation sensors and technology to achieve the holistic surveillance approach, which will integrate aerial and ground components.

The project will combine a multi-role lighter-than-air (LTA) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with an ultra-high resolution multi-sensor surveillance payload supporting border surveillance as well as search & rescue applications in border areas with difficult terrain.

The concepts will be validated in the field by six border guard authorities (Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus), covering three major irregular migration routes into Europe (Eastern Mediterranean, Western Balkan and Eastern Borders Routes).

 Foreseeable Outcomes:

  • development of UAS components to support low cost and long duration border surveillance operations
  • development of sensors and data processing /fusion/interpretation methods to support detection and tracking in difficult terrain, extreme weather conditions and unstructured environments
  • conduction of dissemination, communication and exploitation activities
