Frontex has concluded a forward-looking research study titled “Emerging Training Technologies and Concepts for the European Border and Coast Guard (EBCG).” Its key outputs—a comprehensive report, a booklet, six technology fiches, and a dedicated webinar—have been finalised and are now available for review.
The aim of the study was to investigate how cutting-edge technologies, and innovative educational approaches can enhance training delivery for EBCG personnel. The research focused on immersive and adaptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual and augmented reality, gamification, the metaverse, learning management systems (LMS), and 5G/6G connectivity. These were explored through a variety of methods including workshops, surveys, and consultations with key stakeholders.
One of the major contributions of the study was the development of a bespoke taxonomy for training technologies and the conceptual design of a future technology-enabled EBCG academy. In addition, six concise technology fiches were produced to summarise key findings for each technology area.
Initial findings were presented at the Frontex Conference on Future Training Technologies, where valuable feedback was gathered from EBCG authorities, technology experts, and academic representatives. This feedback was integrated into the final outputs to ensure they reflect both operational realities and expert insights.
A key conclusion of the study is the strong potential of LMS and AI to support more collaborative, personalised, and efficient training environments. While LMS platforms enhance engagement and provide real-time feedback, AI offers powerful tools for decision-making and individual learning pathways—albeit with important considerations related to data privacy and regulation.
The study highlights the importance of collaboration across the EBCG community to successfully adopt and implement these innovations. A shared commitment to responsible innovation, strategic planning, and regulatory alignment will be essential in shaping the future of border and coast guard training in Europe.
Further dissemination of the study’s findings will continue through the publication of a report and webinar, supporting informed decision-making and investment in next-generation training solutions.
