Bulgaria: Гранична полиция

In 1887 the Bulgarian parliament adopted the first Law for border guards, based on suggestion from the prime minister and minister of the Internal Affairs of the Principality of Bulgaria – Stephan Stambolov. According to that law each border guard is responsible for surveillance of a border line not less than two and not more than six kilometers long. In December 1997 with the adoption of the Law of Ministry of Internal Affairs, the military structure of the border guards was transformed to the Border Police. For the first time the surveillance of the border and passport control at the border-crossing points were combined into one police structure. At present Chief Directorate “Border Police” has an active role in the international cooperation with Frontex, leading European authorities, as well as Border Guard Authorities in Black Sea littoral countries. The official day of Border Police is on December 22.
