Our Officers

Luis, Portuguese cross-border crime detection officer in Korczowa

2020-02-18

Meet Luís, an officer from the Portuguese Republican National Guard who was deployed in Korczowa in Poland as part of a Frontex land border operation.

- What did you miss the most during your deployment?

My family, home, pets and Portuguese home cooking. Don’t get me wrong - Polish food is also good! Although new technologies shorten distances, the first thing I did when I got home was to give my wife and children a big hug.

- What do you bring back home from the mission?

Good memories of being part of an international team that works together towards a common goal.

- What will you remember the most?

The commitment, dedication and hard work of fellow Polish border guards. Together, we managed to stop various illegal acts. We seized counterfeit dollar bills, false driving licences and ID documents. We also spotted fake stamps in passports.

- Can you give us some examples?

Together with my Polish colleagues we identified a car where the engine number did not match – it turned out the car was stolen eight months ago in another EU country! Another success was when we stopped people who came to Poland with fake licences wanting to work as professional drivers. There are many people who come to Europe looking for a better life, but it’s our job to make sure they do it in a legal way.

- Would you recommend a mission with Frontex to others?

No doubt! It’s great that we can help other European countries at their borders.
