Foreword

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, is an essential part of Europe’s efforts to safeguard the area of freedom, security and justice. Frontex’s support at the external borders helps guarantee free movement without internal borders checks that many of us take for granted.

This is a big responsibility, and this is why the EU strengthened Frontex, giving us Europe’s first uniformed service and funds to build our own equipment pool and contribute to the development of Europe’s integrated border management.

Frontex has three strategic objectives: reduce vulnerability of the external borders based on comprehensive situational awareness; guarantee safe, secure and well-functioning EU borders, and plan and maintain European Border and Coast Guard capabilities.

We are hard at work to become a more and more reliable counterpart and provide a variety of services to EU countries. Our growing operational footprint at EU’s external borders will be supported by regional offices located throughout Europe.

This year we are recruiting and training more than 700 members of the European Border and Coast guard standing corps who will be deployed in our operations in 2021. In several years, Frontex will count on 10 000 border and coast guard officers to help European countries with border control and migration management. With our own border guards and ability to rely on our own equipment, the Agency will be a reliable partner for national authorities around Europe to deal with a variety of challenges at their borders rather than simply respond to new emergencies. It will also play a bigger role in the management of the growing flows of legitimate travellers across EU’s external borders and strengthen its role in fighting cross-border crime.

Frontex monitors what is going on at the external borders, where support may be needed and how to react. Based on its annual assessments of Europe’s preparedness to face challenges at its borders, Frontex can propose additional border management experts or equipment to cope with potential weaknesses.

Effective border control and migration management require cooperation. Frontex is the guardian and the driving force behind the integrated management of Europe’s borders (IBM). Unified rules and standards are essential to manage the external borders, address migratory challenges and contribute to Europe’s security. Together with national authorities, EU institutions and other agencies and organisations, Frontex will implement the IBM strategy at the European and national levels.

All our activities are in place and carried out with the safety and well-being of citizens in mind, and we are proud of our achievements. At the same time, we are aware of the many challenges ahead. In rising to meet them, we look forward to working together with the national authorities, EU institutions and our many partners for the benefit of the freedom and security of everyone in Europe.
