ICGV Týr conducts search and rescue of 450 migrants

Today at approximately  5 am the Icelandic vessel ICGV Týr deployed by Frontex within the framework of joint operation Triton received a request from the Italian Coast Guard to assist some 450 migrants aboard a freighter, which was proceeding towards the Italian coast on autopilot after having been abandoned by the crew.  Among those in need of assistance are women (some pregnant) and about 60 children. Frontex helps save 3 400 migrants off Libyan coast last week

Vessels and aircraft participating in the Frontex-coordinated operation Triton helped save nearly 3 400 of the 5 300 migrants rescued last week off the Libyan coast. Most of the people were rescued in 27 operations over the weekend (Friday-Sunday), one of the busiest three-day periods since the operation was launched in November 2014. Dramatic rescue operation off the coast of Libya - 29 dead

On Monday night a rubber boat with 106 sub-Saharan migrants was rescued by the Italian Coast Guard, which conducted a dramatic search and rescue operation 120 NM from Lampedusa. 29 people, including three minors, died of hypothermia.
